Waldo's Hawaiian Holiday

Waldo’s Hawaiian Holiday

(SPOILER WARNING!)

I was pretty shocked a month ago when I heard that Alex Cox had finally got a sequel underway to his debut feature Repo Man.  Made in 1984 Repo Man became a massive cult landmark, featuring Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton it had a great social commentary as well as a huge incorporation of the most bizarre, surreal and coincidental events. The film is laced with so many in jokes and running gags you would have to view it plenty of times to get them all. "The new sequel called ‘Repo Chick’ will be set against the backdrop of the present economic downturn, and a boom in repossession that extends far beyond cars and homes." The other crazy part is that David Lynch is producing, the combination of these two already sounds like a winner; let’s hope the project doesn’t lose any momentum. Well on to the main part of the story: so after I found out about this news I did a little research and found that Alex Cox actually had a sequel written for Repo Man over ten years ago, the filming for ‘Waldo’s Hawaiian Holiday’ began filming but never finished, after this he began work on a different sequel ‘Repo Chick’ well the ‘Holiday’ script remained on his website unused until recently when it was adapted into a graphic novel by Chris Bones and Justin Randall. The Comic is said to be an almost word for word adaptation of the original script and being the fan I am I had to buy it as soon as I found out. I just finished reading it and just like the movie I ‘am going to have to go back to it again and again.

The plot follows Otto returning to earth after his departure in the car over ten years ago. He has come back and changed his name to Waldo, the connections to Repo Man are less than I expected but the story is very strong Waldo becomes obsessed with trying to make money and how to get to the ‘Hawaiian vacation’ of his dreams. The artwork is wonderful and the story was very enjoyable.

It’s currently $19.95 on Amazon, quite a bit but if you really love Repo Man I’m sure you’ll be interested.
