Unsurprisingly the 2009 BAFTA's were dominated by Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire with seven awards including Best Film and Best Director. Best Actor deservedly went to Mickey Rourke for his stunning portrayal of Randy 'The Ram' Robinson in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler while Kate Winslet picked up Best Actress for The Reader.
Rourke deservedly celebrates his popular victory.
In the supporting categories there was a posthumous gong for the late Heath Ledger for his iconic Joker in The Dark Knight and Penelope Cruz received the same award in the female category for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
In my humble opinion Waltz With Bashir was wrongly overlooked for Best Film in a Foreign Language with I've Loved You So Long winning, but fortunately the brilliantly black comedy In Bruges picked up the Best Screenplay by Martin McDonagh.
Elsewhere there were few shocks. Wall-E got Best Animation and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button received Best Visual Effects owing to the stunning recreation of Brad Pitt looking old and stumpy. A special mention must also go to Hunger and Man On Wire for picking up Best British Debut Feature and Best British Film respectively and Noel Clarke for Best Newcomer.
The ceremony was presented by the infamous Jonathan Ross and he coasted along with the usual array of tired jokes. Despite the staged and dull proceedings there is a sense of class to the BAFTA's and thankfully the formality was broken by Mickey Rourke's expletive ridden, hilarity filled speech mentioning his enjoyment of seeing Marisa Tomei (his co-star) half naked! Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were both present but both look to be going empty handed at the Oscars after this. Jolie's Changeling has been losing acclaim ever since its release and Pitt's ...Benjamin Button isn't as real and brutal as Rourke's Randy. Oh and of course Oscar love a good comeback story.
Golden Globe and BAFTA usually foreshadow the winners at the Academy Awards and Rourke, Ledger, Winslet and Slumdog Millionaire look safe bets to make it a treble victory. However in the Supporting Actress category don't be surprised to see Doubt pick up a gong for Amy Adams or Viola Davis and as for Best Director Gus Van Sant could be a dark horse for Milk.
