A big holiday weekend for the U.S. box office with the top five films making a combined gross of over one hundred million alone, the big winner was the latest film to come from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and that of course is ‘Paul Blart*: Mall Cop’ making just under 34 million dollars. ‘Gran Torino’ dropped to 2 this week taking a little over $22 million bringing its total up to about $73 million; along with ‘Changeling’s’ worldwide gross of over $75 million this has been a very good year for Eastwood after his last two films ‘Letters from Iwo Jima’ and ‘Flags Of Our Fathers’ underperformed. The latest horror remake ‘My Bloody Valentine in 3-D’ is in third with $21.9 million, a good sign for the future of 3-D movies. Fox Searchlights ‘Notorious’ is at 4 with $21.5 million and ‘Hotel for Dogs’ rounds up the top five with about $17.7 mil. ‘Bride Wars’ takes in just under $12 mil dropping four places to 6, David Goyer’s ‘The Unborn’ at 7 taking in just under $10 mil, mixed reviews seemed to have hurt the latest Daniel Craig film ‘Defiance’ which only managed just over $9 million after expanding its release this weekend. Fox’s last hit to a terrible year ‘Marley and Me’ was at nine this week taking $6.3 mil making its domestic total $132.7 million. At number ten doing consistent business and riding the wave of recent Best Picture and Best Director Golden Globe’s is Danny Boyole’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire which took just under $6 mil and taking its total domestic to about $42.7 million, all in all a pretty good weekend.
*by the way if anyone was wondering I did some research on Urban Dictionary to find out that a ‘Blart is in fact a fart with blood in it, not quite sure why I threw this in, not quite sure why anyone would want to know either.
