Undiscovered Gems

HARD EIGHT

Any big fans of P.T. Anderson will already know about the film but this week’s undiscovered gem is ‘Hard Eight’ P.T. Andersons debut feature. Phillip Baker Hall plays Sydney (which is also the original title of the film) an aging gambler in Vegas, he stumbles across John (John C. Riely) outside a diner homeless with no money. He takes John under his wing and teaches him how to be a gambler, jump to two years later and John has become Sydney’s protégé, he marries a cocktail waitress and part time hooker (Gwyneth Paltrow) and then the story and relationship receive a big twist thanks to a friend of Johns played by Samuel L. Jackson. ‘Hard Eight’ is a great little film and very interesting to see Andersons style developing, the acting is tremendous, a really strong performance by Phillip Baker Hall. After watching this I really don’t think Anderson could ever let me down, the story is far smaller in comparison to his other work but it carries just as much style and substance, I just can’t wait to see what he does next.

Its currently $10.99 on Amazon check it out!
