The Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson partnership has finally begun to pick up steam and move forward with a bundle of roles cast this week including the title character himself, which is now confirmed to be played by Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, Jumper.) Jamie Bell also joins the the other new cast member Daniel Craig who will play the pirate Red Rackham in the forthcoming adaptation of Herge's famous series.
A quick recap of the project for anyone that doesn't know or who hasn't been keeping up; the idea is for a trilogy with Spielberg directing the first, Jackson to do the second and them both collaborating for the third. They are planning to use motion capture 3-d and filming began two days ago with a release date scheduled for 2011. Spielberg originally had the rights over twenty five years ago but lost them when he failed to produce a film, Roman Polanski was at one point attached to the project as well. In 2002 Spielberg re-optioned them and its been in development ever since. Bell sounds like a solid choice and the rest of the cast just gets better with Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Thomson & Thompson. Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones and Mckenzie Crook are also going to feature and I'm sure more names will continue to be thrown in, the script will be based on The Secret of the Unicorn and its followup story Red Rackham's Treasure.
The animated versions of the adventures can be obtained on Amazon, unfortunately they are in separate volumes as Three and Four but I'm hoping that in preparation for the release they release a complete box set with all the adventures.
we will update anymore news for Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn as soon as it becomes available.
