Films To Look Out For In 2009 - Part One

This was originally going to be a mammoth feature showing all the films that we were watching but due to films from Sundance being picked up as we speak and the fact that these dates are constantly subject to change I thought I would just post part one.

Films to look forward to in 2009

January 30th ‘Taken’ starring Liam Neeson as an ex CIA agent on the chase of the people who kidnapped his teenage daughter in Paris. Released over a year ago in Europe Taken is a has already made over $68 million worldwide so it’s got nothing to lose when it comes out in just over a week, some really good stuff in here Liam Neeson is as brutal as ever, and the action scenes aren't in that terrible shaky cam, suck it Bourne films. check out the trailer

February 6th ‘Coraline’ from Harry Selick the stop motion genius behind ‘A Nightmare to Before Christmas’ and ‘James and the Giant Peach’ and based on a Novella by Neil Gaimen. Coraline looks like it will be an early hit of the year, the excellent trailer is so alluring and magical I can see it appealing to a range of ages. Also featuring the voices of Teri Hatcher, Ian Macshane, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and John Hodgman. Every character was hand made and it has been filmed to be presented in Digital 3-D, the budget was about $60 million so 3-D is always a nice way to make some extra bucks.

Also February 6th sees the release of ‘Push’ starring Chris Evans, Djimon Hounsou, Dakota Fanning and Camilla Belle. Looks a bit like an X-Men clone featuring a bunch of people with different powers mostly telekinesis who are battling between good and evil. The trailer was intresting and whilst the effects look slightly off it still looks somewhat innovative and fun take this telekinetic gun fight for example. It might not be a brilliant film but it looks to be in the same ridiculous, mindless, brilliant fun that Jumper was last year, plus Chris Evans proved with 'Sunshine' that he is always entertaining and Djimon Hounsou has never let me down.

February 6th 'Fanboys' The film that was meant to be released over a year and a half ago will finally see itself on a marquee after being pushed back an unhealthy amount of time. The Star Wars based comedy starring Jay Baruchel, Dan Fogler, Sam Huntington, Chris Marquette and Kristen Bell about a group of friends journeying across the country to Skywalker ranch to see 'The Phantom Menace before one of them dies of cancer (wow if they only knew how disappointing the film would be.) The film looks like a great comedy and hopefully will be accessible to non Star Wars fans, plus the amount of cameos announced has already made me want to see it; Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Billy Dee Williams, Carrie Fisher, Danny Trejo, Ethan Suplee, Danny Mcbride, Seth Rogen, Craig Robinson, Jamie King and the Shatman! (William Shatner) Oh yeah and Kristen Bell be looking all sorts a good! Heres the trailer

March 6th 'Watchmen' Probably one of the most anticipated films ever, in production for a modest 22 years, the film many greats have been attached to; Gilliam called it "unfilmable," Aronofsky left the production, creator Alan Moore claims the film is doomed and until about a week ago the completed film was almost held up in enough litigation to ensure it would never see the light of day. Settlement reached means Zack Snyder's adaptation will hit screens March 6th and by March 7th will be number one in the country. I can see opinion on this being split down the middle between fans and newcomers and even though I think this wont be the film of the year I'm still anxious to see it. The first trailer shows off the shots that fans of the book will recognize straight away and if you haven't read the book yet and are waiting for the film, Big Mistake grab it on Amazon for $11.99.

March 13th 'Sunshine Cleaning.' Amy Adams and Emily Blunt star as sisters living with their father Alan Arkin who decide to go into the crime scene clean up business as a lucrative career to send Adams' child to a better, expensive school . The film has a great trailer and looks to be the dark comedy, independent smash of the early year generating a lot of buzz when it premiered at Sundance last year and for some reason it has taken a while to reach the limited release it's being given but with a budget of $5 million im sure it will turn a nice little profit.

March 20th 'Duplicity' Clive Owen and Julia Roberts star in this film that looks like a cross between 'Shoot em Up' and 'Oceans 11' that sees the two stars play MI6 and CIA agents trying to weasel two rival banks out of money, those rival bank CEO's are played by Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson. The film is written and directed by Tony Gilroy the screenwriter of the Bourne Films and the director of Michael Clayton. the trailer is fun but it could easily be a bit of a throwaway film and probably wont have much of an impact on anyone.

March 20th 'I Love You, Man' Paul Rudd is looking for a best friend to be his best man. Jason Segel steps up and laughter follows co starring Radha Mitchell, Jamie Pressley, Andy Samberg, J.K. Simmons, Jane Curtin and a ton more, the red band trailer released this week showed it wasn't going to be the PG-13 love fest it looked like initially and my interest has been renewed.

March 20th 'Knowing' it is always an event every-time Alex Proyas has a new film out the visuals he present are always thrilling and engaging (The Crow, Dark City, I-Robot) and seeing him handle a bit of an apocalyptic tale should be great. The trailer is intense and even though the title is shite it should still be a great thriller. Nicholas Cage will no doubt stop a few people from checking it out but this looks like a good role for him, the film was at one point going to be directed by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko.)

Remember this is only part one but do let us know is we have been negligent and looked over some other highly anticipated films.
