Crushing news last week that Carpenters classic version of The Thing is to be remade and after the previous Carpenter films that have suffered from remakes (The Fog, Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13, plus the proposed remakes of Escape From New York and They Live) it seems as though they wont rest until his entire filmography is tarnished. It's been about eight years since John Carpenter has directed a film, the last one being Ghosts of Mars and now hes back attached to direct four future films, there is little information on The Prince and L.A. Gothic but one of the films called Riot has been on the top list of un-produced scripts for a few years. Riot is about a Governor's misbehaving son going to prison for a scared straight exercise and being trapped in a 'riot,' Nic Cage is attached to play the convict that helps protect him, the films sounds like a bit of a cross between Con Air and Assault on Precinct 13 which should be fun. Then today came the news that Carpenter has signed on to direct a ghost story called The Ward which will star Amber Heard (Pineapple Express) If all these projects go well I expect to see them all remade in ten years.
It's good to see Carpenter back to the horror and action genres, hopefully hes "all out of bubblegum," would love to see another Sci-Fi masterpiece from him though, below is his oscar winning live action short from 1970 The Resurrection of Broncho Billy which he wrote the story for, split into two parts unfortunately the sound and picture are terrible plus it has fixed Italian subs but i can't find a better version anywhere and any fan of Carpenter will be interested to see some of his early work.
Enjoy:
